Building on the success of the 1st Society of Mining Professors (SOMP) Regional Meeting held in Chang Mai in 2013, followed by equally successful meetings respectively in Vietnam, Namibia and Colombia, the 2016 Regional Meeting will be held in Bangkok in July. The Meeting will take place at Chulalongkorn University in the heart of Bangkok, one of the worlds most vibrant and exciting cities. The University is within close proximity to public transport including the famous Skytrain and the main shopping precinct at Siam. Bangkok is also one of the world’s most convenient hubs allowing easy access to various tourist destinations across Southeast Asia

There will be two days of meetings with a one day field trip to a local potash project, that is expected to be the next significant mining investment in Thailand. It will be an excellent opportunity for participants to meet with mining professors from ASIAN/ASEAN regions and members of the Society of Mining Professors (SOMP) who come from various parts of the world. The theme of this year’s regional conference is MINING FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE – Opportunities for Mining Education and Research in the ASEAN region and beyond. It will be a great opportunity for those involved in mining education and research to showcase their work particularly in the areas of safety, health, environment and community

There will also be a Regional Conference “ASEAN++ 2016” held by the Department of Mining and Petroleum Engineering, and sponsored by AUN/Seed-Net and others between 28th to 30th July (2 days ahead of the 5th SOMP Regional Meeting). The Conference is expected to be a big event as there will be many people in this region who are involving in geo-resources, mining and mineral processing who will attend the Conference. Participants who intend to join the Meeting are also welcome for the Conference

Quality accommodation at an affordable price can be arranged at the newly constructed International House (CU i-House), within easy walking distance of the conference venue

What is SOMP?

The Society of Mining Professors (SOMP) / Societät der Bergbaukunde (SDB) was established in 1990 during a special inaugural meeting hosted by the Montanuniversität in Leoben, Austria. The Society is considered the natural successor of the historic Societät der Bergbaukunde, formed in the early 18th century and recognised as the world’s first international scientific society

Since its inception, the Society functioned primarily as a European entity of senior academics in the mining engineering discipline. By 2003, after almost 14 years of operation, Society membership was increased to 140 members representing 60 mining schools in 36 countries

The Society is intended to be a vibrant global Society, representing the majority of mining and mining-related academics. The purpose of the Society is to promote Mining Engineering as an engineering discipline, and to facilitate information exchange, research and teaching collaboration and other collaborative activities among its members

The vision is to be the leading international society for mining university professionals, recognised for:

  • effective networking
  • fostering collaboration and innovation in research, teaching and learning practices
  • relevance and impact for the global mining sector and society at large

The mission of the Society is to contribute towards a sustainable minerals supply for society through:

  • actively developing and supporting the mining engineering discipline
  • development of long-term professional relationships
  • exchanging innovative experience in teaching and learning practice
  • sharing research experiences, capabilities and future challenges
  • fostering professional career development and social awareness
  • providing timely, authoritative and independent comments on relevant global issues
